The Youth Learn to Hunt Turkey program got off to a great start with roughly 55 youth, mentors, members, and DNR representatives. Everyone met at the Prescott middle School for classroom training which included Turkey Hunting Rules and Regulations, Safety related to Turkey specific, and overall Gun Safety. From there, the group headed out to the Riley Gravel Pit where several stations were setup for the youth. The first station simulated shooting a bird from a blind and also patterning their shotgun from a sitting position. Located at station 2 was the Turkey Call Station, one of the most popular stations, where even members said that they learned things that they never known before. Special Thanks to Denny Moline and Rick Jasperson from the KinnGobblers for their expert training. The third station got the youth familiar with Turkey Blinds and Decoy Stations, and in the 4th station, Brad Peterson from the WiDNR explained about Turkey Habitat and the Biology of the Turkey.
The Day of the Hunt arrived and we were met with Winter Like Conditions, but that did not stop the youth's resolve. At 6:45am, the fisrt Tom was shot. Mitch Schanus was the mentor and as he explained the last moments before the shot and the first couple after the shot, it was hard to know who was more excited, Mike or Mitch. Over the next day, 4 of the 18 youths would down a bird, but all were able to see their first turkey strutting, or hear their first wild gobble. Everyone had a great time.
Thanks to everyone for their hard work in making this first Learn to Hunt Program a great success.
