Prescott's first ever "Kick-Off the Summer Celebration," an event designed to bring local families and organizations together, will be held Thursday, June 19 from 5-8 p.m. at Freedom Park.
The event, sponsored by Prescott Community Education, will include games, food vendors and 23 booths, most which showcase local events or groups. The Prescott Farmer's Market, regularly scheduled for Thursday nights, will still take place as well.
"Our hope is that people will show up for the fun, but also have a chance to learn about other ways they can make this a memorable summer," said Penny Peterson, Prescott's Community Education Director. "There are so many things going on that people should know about that we (the celebration committee) thought maybe we should put together an event that showcases those things to the Prescott Community."
The celebration will have several things designed just for kids, including a kid's photo contest sponsored by the Sportsman's Club and family games sponsored by the Prescott High School Volunteer Group. In addition, many of the booths will feature information about children's or family activities, such as Prescott Daze, the Pierce County Fair, Carpenter's Nature Center, 4-H groups and bike safety by the police department.
"This is really designed for people of all ages," added Peterson. "We just want people to have another chance to celebrate what makes Prescott what it is, and to have fun as a community."
One of the games the volunteer group will be running is a dunk tank, which will feature numerous school district staff. Included on the line-up are outgoing High School Principal Steve Shaw and incoming Principal David Bunn, Malone Principal Scott Halverson, Sportsmen's club member Tim Runquist, as well as a handful of teachers and coaches from Prescott. People who bring a non-perishable food item will receive a free throw (maximum three items/free attempts) at the person of their choice.
In the March 6, 2008 issue of the Prescott Journal, Russ Dibb reported the following:
"Last week the Prescott Foundation made a grant to the Sportsman's Club. The Foundation sees this new group as being beneficial to the Prescott Community because of their interest in working with area youth in learning about the natural resources as well as learning about hunting, fishing, and conservation practices." - Russ Dibb Prescott Journal
In the article Neil Durhman (spokesman for the Prescott Foundation) went on to say: "This group has a unique set of goals for their club and we are very impressed."
The Prescott Sportsman's Club would like to extend our appreciation to the members of the Prescott Foundation for their belief in our actions and our overall mission as a club.
